My Music Guide To Surviving University

I’ve recently moved back to university in order to start my third and final year as an undergraduate, and I have to say the time has gone so very quickly it’s insane. What is even crazier that music that was the soundtrack to my freshers week is now becoming less and less played…well until I get hold of the aux cable anyway.

Music always seems to be around my whenever I’m at uni, whether it’s playing through my headphones while I’m studying in the library, blasting out of a speaker (I recommend Panasonic CD Speakers*) during pre-drinks or even while having a bit of R rated fun. I also have music being played live in some of my classes (since I’m a dance student) and honestly don’t know what I’d do without music in my life.

Not only is it a good way to relax and go into your own little personal bubble, but it also creates a conversation starter with just about anyone…which is always great if you’re a fresher and want a good way to get to know your flat (if you’re living on campus) or even your course mates. Never underestimate how good a friendship you can build from starting a conversation over the music.

Now in this post, I’m going to talk about a couple of songs that I’ve found iconic to my first and second years at university so if you’re curious as to what sort of music I have on my playlist then go ahead and keep reading on…it’s going to include some of the memories I’ve created in the past couple of years.

[pipdig_padded_text] Watch Me (Whip/ Nae Nae) by Silento: Now this song brings back many memories from the day I moved into uni as well as my freshers week. It was a song that I could never resist dancing to, after all, who doesn’t love a song that tells them exactly what to do opposed to letting your slightly intoxicated brain think you’re the next winner of Strictly Come Dancing or So You Think You Can Dance. However, after hearing this song so many times in the past, I can’t really listen to it anymore without getting mildly annoyed at it…I’m sure I’ll end up loving it again one day…I did with the Cha Cha Slide.

No Scrubs by TLC: This is one of my ultimate songs to belt out when I’ve had a bad day…along with Defying Gravity from Wicked…but this song is just so sassy and it always puts me in such a good mood. While this isn’t my number 1 go-to song for karaoke, it is a song that has a firm place on my shower playlist. I mean who doesn’t love a bit of throwing it back to the 90s…even though I was only born at the end of the 90s…oops. I’m still a 90s kid at heart after all the 90s didn’t really end until at least 2002.

Shut Up And Dance by WALK THE MOON: While this is a song that I overplayed at pre-drinks during my first year, I’ve slowly fallen back in love with all over again and cannot wait to blast it out throughout third year. It’s just such a happy and upbeat song that puts me in such a good mood, whether I’m going out or just have a cosy night in…or pulling an all-nighter in the library while stressing about all the essays I have to write. Apparently, all lecturers like to put their deadlines in the same week as each other…not appreciated thanks.

As you can tell I’m definitely more a fan of having an upbeat playlist and while I enjoy listening to more relaxing music, I often pick something upbeat over something more chill…unless I’m hungover. Although I am a massive fan of listening to acoustic versions of my favourite pop/ more upbeat songs and I’m always on the hunt for a good cover.

What’s your current favourite song? Mine’s probably Look What You Made Me Do by Taylor Swift.
